Easy Organic Cold Brew Coffee Recipe
Easy Organic Cold Brew Coffee Recipe
This recipe is produces a coffee to water ratio of about 1:5. I have found this to provide a strong brew that is potent and flavorful. Increase or decrease the ratio to your preference; There is a table at the end of this page with common brewing containers vs volume of ground coffee and their corresponding ratios!
Ingredients:
64 oz growler with tight fitting lid
64 oz of filtered water
1-1/2 cups of organic whole coffee beans
Coffee grinder
Standard 12-cup Coffee Pot with #4 Filter (or larger size)
Recipe:
Grind 1-1/2 cups of organic coffee beans. Grind beans to standard or slightly more coarse. The finer the coffee grounds, the more bitter the brew.
Add the coffee grounds to the growler.
Fill the growler up to the top with filtered water.
Tighten the lid to the growler and shake vigorously for about 15 seconds to disperse the coffee grounds throughout the water.
Let growler sit at room temperature for 30 minutes. The coffee grounds will soak up the water during this time and begin to produce bubbles.
After 30 minutes, open the growler and fill the remaining volume with filtered water.
Leave in the refrigerator for 24 hours. Once or twice during the 24 hours, shake vigorously for about 15 seconds to re-expose all of the grounds to the water.
After 24 hours, remove the growler from the fridge and add a new filter to your standard coffee pot.
Shake the growler vigorously to suspend the coffee grounds in the water and immediately pour the coffee into the filter until the filter is full. Shaking vigorously immediately prior to pouring, allows for grounds to flow out of the growler and into the coffee filter. This serves two purposes...
Allows the coffee to filter over the grounds again.
Gets the grounds out of the growler container (which makes it easier to rinse in the sink)
Allow for the coffee to drain through the filter and into your standard coffee pot.
Repeat numbers #9 & #10 above, until all the coffee is filtered into your coffee pot. Your #4 filter will likely be very full of grounds towards the end of the growler. The filtering process itself should take approximately 20 minutes.
There will be some coffee grounds remaining in your growler. Shake the remaining coffee grounds out of your growler and into the wastebasket as best you can.
Rinse the final remaining coffee grounds out of the growler and into the sink.
Return the cold brew coffee to the growler by pouring from the coffee pot.
Enjoy with or without dilution (depending on how high-octane you like your java!)
